Two years after Rachmaninoff wrote his famous Vespers in 1915, the Russian Revolution silenced sacred music and the voice of the Russian Orthodox Church. Today, one hears resurgence in the glorious Orthodox musical tradition. John Tavener’s Greek Orthodox inspired compositions and Arvo Part’s reverent treatment of Church Slavonic hearken back to the glory of Orthodox composition typified by Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky and Bortniansky.

Sculptures, drawings, models, props, and video footage reveal the progression of the artist’s conceptual strategies that precede the final product. These works serve as a non-hierarchical collection of fragments, illustrating ideas related to social psychology, economy, structural engineering, and architecture.

This ongoing exhibit highlights important examples of Northern European Renaissance and Baroque art. Works on view span three centuries and include religious paintings by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), Gerard Seghers (1591-1651) and Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem (1562-1638).

The nearly 300 works on display, 1885 to 1945,  provide insight into the ways design has influenced and adapted to the modern world. The installation explores the many focal points of The Wolfsonian’s collection, including design-reform movements, architecture, urbanism, industrial design, transportation, world’s fairs, advertising, political propaganda, and labor iconography.
